Humorous depictions of peasants formed a popular genre for German engravings during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Customarily, these scenes provided the opportunity to describe peasant outfits, manners and facial caricatures. While Dürer’s peasants adhere to this tradition, they have been rendered as physically monumental and maintain a degree of dignity in their mores. Like Dürer’s other engravings from this period, the figures have been modeled with fine parallel strokes that tend toward a single tone.
