Saint Dominic Distributing Rosaries

1590s
16th century
29 cm x 20.3 cm (11 7/16 in. x 8 in.)

Giovanni Battista Paggi (Genoa, 1554 - 1627) Primary

Object Type: drawing
Artist Nationality: Europe, Italian
Medium and Support: Pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash over black chalk
Credit Line: Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017
Accession Number: 2017.1265

This is a fine study of Paggi’s maturity, quite automatic but less extravagant in line, with more carefully applied and gradated washes, relative to the style of Cambiaso. Although no corresponding painting has been identified, the auto-graph inscription describes the drawing as preparatory for “an altarpiece in [the patron’s] chapel in Randazzo, Sicily.”
