A fascinating intersection of Florentine Baroque modes, this drawing reproduces a devotional painting by Carlo Dolci, a contemporary whose work epitomizes the city’s cultural involution and associated pietism. (The Collection features an important devotional painting by Dolci.) Beautifully executed, itself practically a miniature painting, this drawing was obviously intended as a finished work, for independent sale or perhaps presentation to a patron. Drawings of the kind are rare in Volterrano’s oeuvre.
