By securing the patronage of the papal nephew, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, Giuseppe Cesari became the favorite artist of Clement VIII. Among his major commissions was designing the mosaics in the cupola of St. Peter’s. This is one of three surviving studies for an early version of that project.
