Similar to Veronese at the outset, Bordone combined the lessons of Titian’s loose and vibrantly optical painting with the more elaborate design and incisive drawing of Mannerism in Central Italy. His broad handling of chalk is close to that of Titian, to whom this sheet has sometimes been attributed. The more decorative pattern of light and the peculiar abbreviation of the figures are, however, typical of Bordone.
