Castello was the last master of miniature painting in Italy. His specialty was the translation of famous works by other artists. Here the composition depends upon Dürer’s woodcut of the scene in his Life of the Virgin. With their meticulous attention to craft and their restrained style, such miniatures were very popular as luxurious objects of private devotion. Despite the limited scope of his art, Castello was the most successful artist in Genoa during the 1590s.
