Bellange, active principally as a printmaker, was one of the last distinctive exponents of Mannerism. His extravagant compositions, lyrical figures, and strange feeling derive in large measure from his study of Parmigianino’s etchings. This Saint James, from an incomplete series of Apostles, makes the debt especially clear in its pure line work, light biting, and silvery tonality.
