John Heaviside, after Johann Zoffany
55.1 cm x 40.6 cm (21 11/16 in. x 16 in.)
(London, England, 1743 - 1822, London, England)
Medium and Support:
Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Karen G. and Dr. Elgin W. Ware, Jr. Collection, 2005
As noted in the inscription, Heaviside was Royal surgeon to George III. He holds a human heart, while a spine rests in the jar behind him. These refer not only to his profession but to the well-known collection of anatomy and natural history that he assembled in his London home. Established and supported by a distinguished Texas physician and board member of the Texas Medical Association, the Ware Collection contains some 120 prints of medical imagery.
