Herbert was a member of the Order of the Garter, the pinnacle order of chivalry reserved for only a few Englishmen without the rank of prince. Patrons of art and literature, Herbert and his brother, William, were venerated with a dedication in Shakespeare’s First Folio of collected works, published posthumously in 1623.
