Kathleen Newton was Tissot's mistress from at least 1876 until her death at age twenty-eight in 1882. Executed shortly afterward, this is the most elaborate of his many prints involving her likeness. Unusually, it features her young son, Cecil George, whom Tissot is thought to have fathered.
