Exquisitely refined and widely influential, Abraham Bloemaert was the last great figure of Dutch Mannerism. Around 1650 his son, Frederick, published a collection of prints after his father’s drawings. The use of chiaroscuro, unusual by that time, was an additional tribute to the period of his father’s activity and the work of contemporaries like Hendrick Goltzius. On the other hand, Frederick replaced the line block with an etched plate, which better conveyed the elegant line and complicated rhythm of his father’s pen work.
