Manuel Álvarez Bravo captured images of everyday life in Mexico City with a keen eye for the ironic and the uncanny. "Los agachados" (1934), showing a group of workers eating at a Mexico City diner, suggests a similar unveiling of a hidden reality. Facing away from the viewer, the laborers are solidly anchored to their seats as the low metal curtain shields them from the midday sun. His carefully composed images reveal his modern sense of aesthetics. Regardless of circumstances, Álvarez Bravo presents his subjects with a sense quiet dignity.
