The leading painter at Parma in the third quarter of the sixteenth century, Bertoia continued to elaborate upon Parmigianino’s deliberately artificial and extraordinarily beautiful style. The so-called Angels of Justice is one of a series of apocalyptic scenes that Bertoia frescoed in the Farnese palace at Caprarola. Typical in its delicate calligraphy, this drawing was an early idea for the upper part of the composition.
