Bartolomeo Biscaino (Genoa, 1629 - 1657, Genoa) Primary

Object Type: drawing
Artist Nationality: Europe, Italian
Medium and Support: Brush and brown wash over red chalk with touches of black chalk and gray wash on cream antique laid paper
Credit Line: Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017
Accession Number: 2017.916

Biscaino’s style was determined by the more stylized and lyrical painters in Genoa, Valerio Castello in particular, then further shaped by Castiglione. Drawings and etchings represent most of his brief activity. Their forms tend to be elastic in structure, iridescent in surface, and delicate in touch. This late drawing, explicit in its dependence upon Parmigianino’s types and Castiglione’s innovative techniques, is unusually bold.
