Trained with Paggi, Scorza became the leading painter in early century Genoa of subjects dedicated to animals or including them in narrative contexts. His numerous drawings of animals seem to have been rendered in series, comprising a repertory of motifs for inclusion in various paintings. Especially appealing, this study reveals the acuteness of his observation, sensitivity in his placement of motifs on the sheet, and delicacy of touch. The Collection includes another very fine study of a family of goats, and a major painting of mythological pretext, Orpheus Charming the Beasts.
