Looking at impressions like this one, some early connoisseurs speculated that the composition allowed for the printing of a tone block in pale ink and that the print was conceived as a chiaroscuro. The existence of one such impression, in the British Museum, proves their intuition. That tone block must have been damaged or lost early in the printing. Nonetheless, the second, line block was so skillfully cut and elaborate that it could function well on its own.
