In this scene of a vibrant fall day in the town of Wentworth, New Hampshire, Maurice Prendergast's combination of bright green, red, orange, and blue showcases his love of color. Using watercolor, his exclusive medium until 1904, he explored color and form in familiar scenery. Color, rather than shading or clear outlines, differentiates the forms of the girl in the foreground, the horse and carriage, trees, houses, and sky.
In the lower right corner, Prendergast dedicates the painting to fellow Bostonian artist and art collector Charles H. Pepper.
