Charged with rebuilding society, Lenny’s mission begins when a Bear presents him with a flag and a set of coordinates to guide him on his journey. Depicted here, the scene’s composition recalls the works of Romantic landscape painters like Caspar David Friedrich. In Marshall’s work across various media, nature does not simply provide a backdrop, but also functions as a muse. Lenny’s saga metaphorically refers to both art making and life itself and illustrates the symbiotic relationship between man and nature. The Bear Takes the Flag to Lenny depicts an imagined moment of creative inspiration and the start of an artistic journey", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Purchase through the generosity of Michael Chesser, 2008", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "American", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; American and Contemporary Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2008.120.TIF", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2008.120.TIF", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2008.120.TIF", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2008.120.TIF", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "11140", "Image_Type" : "Digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 25217, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/25217", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.743", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "2007", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "2007", "_Disp_End_Date" : "2007", "Disp_Title" : "Bicycle Boat", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Bicycle Boat", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Jonathan Marshall", "Sort_Artist" : "Marshall, Jonathan", "Disp_Dimen" : "144.8 x 137.2 x 292.1 cm (57 x 54 x 115 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "144.8 cm", "Disp_Width" : "137.2 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "", "Medium" : "Wood, metal, and duct tape", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Wood, metal, and duct tape", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Purchase though funds provided by Beverly Bajema and Will Dibrell, Paul Barr, Sheila and Colin Buechler, Michael Casias, Polly Husted, Patrick Martin, Arturo Palacios, Kristi Pruett, the artist, and two anonymous donors; Gift from The Contemporary Austin to the Blanton Museum of Art, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "sculpture", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "American and Contemporary Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ ] },{ "embark_ID" : 25218, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/25218", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.744", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "2007", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "2007", "_Disp_End_Date" : "2007", "Disp_Title" : "Book of Lenny", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Book of Lenny", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Jonathan Marshall", "Sort_Artist" : "Marshall, Jonathan", "Disp_Dimen" : "", "Disp_Height" : "", "Disp_Width" : "", "Dimen_Extent" : "", "Medium" : "Digital video", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Digital video", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of the artist and Art Palace Gallery; Gift from The Contemporary Austin to the Blanton Museum of Art, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "electronic media", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "American and Contemporary Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ ] }, ] }
