Here she is enthroned at the center of the composition. At the upper left, an allegorical figure places a halo upon a portrait bust and holds a crown above a young man with a staff that rhymes with the scepter of the empress. The scene commemorates both the death of her husband, Francis I, and the naming of her eldest son, twenty-four-year-old Joseph II, as coregent and emperor in 1765. Cultivating an explicitly realistic representation of nature, he established the early conventions and set the stylistic direction in Holland. This new vision was based upon a rejection of both the imaginary subjects preferred by the late Mannerists and their extreme stylization even when treating less fantastic views or motifs. Van de Velde essayed familiar reality in a deliberately simplified and unpretentious fashion. Characteristic, this drawing is one of about a dozen that survive from a dismembered sketchbook. The Mannerists’ layered and interpenetrated composition has yielded to a single diagonal that leads steadily across the dunes like a path. Their complex color scheme has been replaced by a uniform tonality that evokes natural light and palpable atmosphere. Moreover, van de Velde’s reality was not just familiar to the eye but specifically Dutch. Especially telling in this drawing, the low horizon, landmarks like the old lighthouse, and figures like the successful fishermen imply the sea comfortably nearby. Such drawings are among the first works to express the great pride of place in the recently independent Holland. M. W. Turner, John Constable, and Thomas and William Daniell. Turner, in fact, who once worked with Girtin copying drawings for their patron Dr. Monro, admired his friend’s talent, commenting, “If Tom Girtin had lived, I should have starved.” Girtin visited Paris in 1801–1802 and made a series of etchings of the city, published the year after his death as A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris and Its Environs. The museum’s drawing may have been a preliminary study for one of these views that was never executed, or it may have been part of an abandoned plan to create a large panoramic painting of the city of Paris to display in London. The watercolor has been cut down from a larger composition and pieced back together at the left, with the two sections differently colored to suggest full daylight and twilight. It is his innovative handling of the watercolor medium that earned Girtin not only Turner’s admiration but also a place in the history of landscape painting in England. He is said to have revolutionized watercolor painting by his use of broadly applied, strong washes, which freed the medium from its dependence on line drawing. The Museum possesses a fine painting of the kind by his son and follower, as well as nine drawings and some three dozen etchings by Giovanni Benedetto himself. Training in Antwerp, then active in Rome, Roos settled in Genoa in 1616. A great success, his work helped established the genre of animal painting and inspired Castiglione’s specific approach, weaving familiar, domesticated animals into a procession across the foreground of a deep landscape. Only recently identified, Roos’s drawings are striking in their complex atmosphere and broad touch. They evidently also influenced the formation of Castiglione’s draftsmanship. They are, however, quite rare: there is only one other in an American public collection, and the Suida-Manning Collection had none. His style of drawing was hardly less characterized, or influential, with a sensitiv-ity and a differentiation of vocabulary unprecedented in the North. While no sheet is certainly ascribed to him, there is a fair number of drawings by followers that are cognate with his style and with one another. This drawing is an impor-tant example, corresponding to a recurring motif in paintings by followers, for example the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints by the Master of 1499 at Richmond, and sharing its elaborate technique with several other drawings. The tendency toward a lower viewpoint for the upper half of the figure, a higher one for the areas of drapery, and the forward, almost unbalancing center of the fig-ure’s gravity are, however, close to the habits of the mature Hugo, uncommon in the more regular works of most followers, and indicative of an early date.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "Flemish", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.1156.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.1156.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.1156.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.1156.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "4923", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 16262, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/16262", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.1431", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "circa 1600", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1595", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1605", "Disp_Title" : "The Nativity", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "The Nativity", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Maarten de Vos", "Sort_Artist" : "Vos, Maarten de", "Disp_Dimen" : "39.4 cm x 31.7 cm (15 1/2 in. x 12 1/2 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "39.4 cm", "Disp_Width" : "31.7 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash over traces of black chalk", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash over traces of black...", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Vos was the leading history painter in Antwerp in the late 16th century. In his work the increasingly dry conventions of the school’s Mannerist painters were transformed by the dynamic compositions and saturated color that he had gathered from his early training in Italy, and especially from the Venetians. With their clear narration and incipient naturalism, his altarpieces dominated artistic production for the Counter-Reformation in the South Netherlands. This draw-ing is closely related to a late altarpiece in Antwerp’s Koninklijk Museum, although its variations in the background, cautious finish, and monogram suggest less a preparatory study than a model for an alternative project or possibly an engraving.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "Flemish", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.1431.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.1431.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.1431.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.1431.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "5846", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 15884, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/15884", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.806", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "circa 1540", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1535", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1545", "Disp_Title" : "A Mountainous River Landscape", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "A Mountainous River Landscape", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Anonymous", "Sort_Artist" : "Anonymous", "Disp_Dimen" : "10.8 cm x 27.94 cm (4 1/4 in. x 11 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "10.8 cm", "Disp_Width" : "27.94 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Pen and brown ink, brown wash", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Pen and brown ink, brown wash", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "Flemish", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.806.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.806.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.806.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.806.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "5674", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 11120, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/11120", "Disp_Access_No" : "1982.710", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "circa 1587", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1582", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1592", "Disp_Title" : "The Holy Family", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "The Holy Family", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Bartholomaeus Spranger", "Sort_Artist" : "Spranger, Bartholomaeus", "Disp_Dimen" : "26.3 cm x 20 cm (10 3/8 in. x 7 7/8 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "26.3 cm", "Disp_Width" : "20 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Pen and brown ink, with brown and gray washes, white and sanguine gouaches, on c", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Pen and brown ink, with brown and gray washes, white and sanguine gouaches, on cream laid paper indented for transfer, laid down", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Trained in Antwerp, inspired by Italian Mannerism, Bartholomaeus Spranger cultivated a brilliantly artificial and highly subjective style. In long service to Rudolf II, he gave shape to the emperor’s erudite taste and more than any other artist defined the School of Prague’s extravagant style. By the late 1580s Hendrick Goltzius was celebrated as the greatest engraver of his time. He developed a commanding burin stroke, a strict organization of mark, and an unprecedented ability to convey pictorial properties. In reasserting the intellectual dimension of engraving, Goltzius’s style was itself one of the major developments of late Mannerism. One of the last of Spranger and Goltzius’s seven collaborations, this engraving is relatively simple in iconography and obviously Parmigianinesque in vocabulary. Identical in size, its contours indented from transferring the design, the drawing is the very sheet from which the plate was prepared. This superb impression of the print matches the rarified beauty of its prototype. ", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Archer M. His style depends upon the Venetians of the early eighteenth century, particularly Sebastiano Ricci and Gaspare Diziani. In 1773 he was commissioned an altarpiece of The Baptism of Christ for the popular pilgrimage church at Sonntagberg. One of the most capable and prolific etchers in Central Europe, he created an etching of the composition before the altarpiece was even completed. This print may have been part of an effort to raise funds for the project. It was with this extraordinarily fresh, double-sided sheet that Kremser-Schmidt prepared the etching. He began by copying his painting on the recto (reproduced, left), then traced this drawing on the verso, and finally transferred this second, reversed version to the copper plate. This process facilitated any correction of the work on the plate and restored the eventual print to the proper orientation of the painting. Most striking, despite its technical role and necessarily restrained handling, the drawing possesses wonderfully varied color, sparkling light, and sheer vibrancy.
