This study is one of four such views of Viennese church interiors in the Suida-Manning Collection. Like most of Kleiner’s work, they were probably intended for a series of prints. This particular view records the high altar in Vienna’s principal Jesuit church. The altar was designed by Andrea Pozzo, a renowned architect, theorist, and master of perspectival construction who had close ties to the Order. Kellerthaler was noteworthy as a designer of book illustration and decorative objects. His figural style generally derives from that of the great Mannerists at Rudolf II’s court, Spranger and Hans von Aachen. This drawing has been compared with a signed painting of 1592 in Cologne and, on account of its format, even distribution of motifs, and incisive articulation, suggested as a design for metal work, perhaps a dish or plaquette.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "German", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.1185.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.1185.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.1185.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.1185.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "3342", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 16293, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/16293", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.1187", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "0", "_Disp_End_Date" : "0", "Disp_Title" : "Kloster Neuburg", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Kloster Neuburg", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Salomon Kleiner", "Sort_Artist" : "Kleiner, Salomon", "Disp_Dimen" : "42.55 cm x 27.94 cm (16 3/4 in. x 11 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "42.55 cm", "Disp_Width" : "27.94 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Pen and brown ink and grey wash and watercolor", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Pen and brown ink and grey wash and watercolor", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "German", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.1187.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.1187.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.1187.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.1187.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "5856", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 16065, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/16065", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.1193", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1773", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1773", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1773", "Disp_Title" : "The Baptism of Christ (recto and verso)", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "The Baptism of Christ (recto and verso)", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Martin Johann Schmidt, called Kremser-Schmidt", "Sort_Artist" : "Kremser-Schmidt, Martin Johann Schmidt, called", "Disp_Dimen" : "24.1 cm x 12.6 cm (9 1/2 in. x 4 15/16 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "24.1 cm", "Disp_Width" : "12.6 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Recto and verso: Pen and brown ink with brush and brown and gray washes over tra", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Recto and verso: Pen and brown ink with brush and brown and gray washes over tra", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Kremser-Schmidt was an important painter principally of religious subjects in lower Austria. His style depends upon the Venetians of the early eighteenth century, particularly Sebastiano Ricci and Gaspare Diziani. In 1773 he was commissioned an altarpiece of The Baptism of Christ for the popular pilgrimage church at Sonntagberg. One of the most capable and prolific etchers in Central Europe, he created an etching of the composition before the altarpiece was even completed. This print may have been part of an effort to raise funds for the project. It was with this extraordinarily fresh, double-sided sheet that Kremser-Schmidt prepared the etching. He began by copying his painting on the recto (reproduced, left), then traced this drawing on the verso, and finally transferred this second, reversed version to the copper plate. This process facilitated any correction of the work on the plate and restored the eventual print to the proper orientation of the painting. Most striking, despite its technical role and necessarily restrained handling, the drawing possesses wonderfully varied color, sparkling light, and sheer vibrancy.
