Mixing up seemingly disjunctive references to Western European medieval architecture (a castle with parapet), Chinese landscape painting (the way the castle merges with the carved ripples of the jagged hillside), and modernist design (the assertive but clunky rectangular base), Chu has created an odd and unexpected hybrid that blends artistic styles and iconic images from diverse traditions. Fluent in the art of watercolor as well as sculpture, Chu gives her three-dimensional works an intentionally unfinished appearance, while embellishing them with traces of color that define motion rather than form. As massive and bulky, even ungainly, as Castle Number One is, it feels like a quick sketch, like something mutable and transitory. The work consists of 3,100 square feet of custom-cast acrylic that covers the walls in a striped pattern. The horizontal, saturated blue bands gradually shift in color as they move up, creating a colored abstraction that fades from deep blue to white at the top. The title is a reference to Donald Judd’s stack pieces as well as to his presence in Texas. While pointing directly to illusion rather than negating it, Stacked Waters is a nod to Judd’s exploration of the interior of the box. The space suggests a container of colored light and places the viewer on the inside. Flooded with natural light from immense skylights overhead, the reflective, watery quality of the acrylic’s surface functions like a blue mirror. Viewers see vaporous, reflections of themselves, the space and others in the surface, turning the work into a kind of projection marking the real-time activity of the museum. The reflections also become a changing portrait of the Texas light, appearing somber and shadowy when overcast or at the end of the day, and drenched in saturated blue color and glare on bright days. The work integrates the existing complex of arches and stairs into an image: that of a deep volume of water. The physical space is blurred by becoming an illusion that shifts with the movements of museum-goers. As one moves up the stairs, the horizontal lines that mark the pool’s depth shift in relation to one’s body, until, at the top of the fifty steps, the viewer “emerges” from the blue area into the galleries. Jiménez dedicated much of his career to creating public art that could be seen and appreciated by every one. This commitment to accessibility and social commentary aligns Jiménez with American and Mexican muralists of the Depression era, while his bright colors, industrial materials, references to popular culture, and depictions of those typically excluded from the American cultural narrative root his work in the Chicano movement. His monumental sculptures can be found today in public settings throughout the United States. One of Jiménez’s first monumental works, Progress II, depicts a vaquero, or horseman from the Southwest or Mexico, as he wrangles a raging steer in a dynamic, gravity-defying composition. Jiménez’s treatment of his materials further generates a sense of momentum. Constructed from fiberglass and painted with automobile paint, the sculpture has the ultra-slick finish of a hotrod. Exploring themes of technological progress and westward migration, Jiménez depicts various modes of transportation. Horse, stagecoach, car, train, and airplane appear in The Progress Suite, a series of four prints made as companions to the sculpture. “I am a traditional artist in the sense that I give form to my culture’s icons,” Jiménez once stated. “In the past, important icons were religious; now they are secular.” Icons of the American West—cowboy, “Indian,” horse, buffalo, steer—feature prominently in the sculptures and prints that comprise the Progress series. The theme of capture is also ubiquitous: the vaquero ropes a steer, a Native American hunts a buffalo, and a stagecoach whisks off a damsel in distress. Underneath the main components of the sculpture exists a smaller pursuit: an owl stalks a mouse. A disciplined and inventive artist, he found some measure of critical and popular success, but he is best remembered by those who observed his tenacious working process and admired his idiosyncratic innovations. A pioneer of modern sculpture, Sugarman moved sculpture off the pedestal and across the floor sooner than most. He was committed to color as an indispensable aspect of sculpture, experimenting with unusual and vivid hues that reinforced the mass and weight of his muscular forms. Like Stuart Davis, who was one of his inspirations, Sugarman was a student of jazz and sought lively visual corollaries to its atonal structure and syncopated rhythms. Davis’s painterly concept of simultaneity encouraged Sugarman to experiment with multiple and interchangeable sculptural forms. Two in One is among Sugarman’s masterpieces. belief that art is a process of communication between artist, artwork, and viewer, a process that grants the viewer as much say in the creative potential of each artwork as the artist himself. The two works also testify to Torreano’s longstanding preoccupation with a particular set of formal issues: both I and Universe Painting are predicated on an ornamental sense of geometry and a vivid sense of color and surface. At the same time, they give viewers the opportunity to trace the development of Torreano’s career between 1968 and 1975, when he refined certain theoretical principles and shifted media from painting to a hybridized form of painting and sculpture. Torreano’s hybridized Universe Paintings pose a direct challenge to the tenets of Greenbergian Modernism, insofar as they inhabit the categories of painting and sculpture simultaneously. They also invoke Michael Fried’s notion of “theatricality.” In order to be seen in their totality, the Universe Paintings demand that the viewer constantly change positions. Whenever the viewer steps close to them, moreover, she sees her distorted image reflected the jewels.
