Sadeler's collaboration with the court painter (and fellow Fleming) Spranger, produced some of the latest and most extravagant masterpieces of Mannerist printmaking. Reproducing part of a triptych for the chapel in Rudolf’s palace, The Three Maries is particularly elegant in design, brilliant in cutting, and stylized in feeling. Although this impression lacks the inscription, which would indicate the print’s state, it is evidently early and very fine. Steinberg acquired his 23 engravings by Aegidius, and dozens more by his family members, while their work was practically ignored. Sadeler’s engraving, part of the inscription explains, was based upon his own drawing from life. The print has a pronounced oriental flavor, not just because of the costume and Persian inscription, but due to the slight flattening of the bust and broadening of the arch that create a more uniform pattern. The portrayal is equally distinguished by its specific and sympathetic characterization of a non-European personality. In both regards, the print is unusual in Western art much before the mid 19th century. Its circumstance, to judge from the presence and prominence of the ambassador’s native tongue, was his commission of a work to be circulated both in Europe and at home. Many major artists engraved small images of the Virgin and Child for personal, private devotion. These prints were avidly collected and they were used in a variety of ways that evolved as the Virgin’s reception transformed. Devout Christians carried around these small, pocket-sized prints with them. Some early Netherlandish paintings contain a detail of a print of the Virgin tacked to the wall of a room with sealing wax.
