In his series of sixteen prints from Voyage en bateau, characterized as an amusement for a small circle of friends, Daubigny recorded his trip down the Oise and Seine rivers. In 1857 he outfitted a small boat as a studio where he sketched some of his views, finishing them at a later date. Considered one of the "most remarkable" sheets in the album, this strongly backlit self-portrait was reprinted in contemporary monographs of the artist (1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition, and 1912) validating the Impressionists' firmly held belief in painting en plein air (outdoors).", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Isidore Simkowitz in memory of Amy Cecelia Simkowitz-Rogers, 1998", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "print", "Creation_Place2" : "French", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1998.156.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1998.156.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1998.156.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1998.156.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "4030", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 3869, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/3869", "Disp_Access_No" : "1992.298", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1833", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1833", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1833", "Disp_Title" : "Un Forgeron [A Blacksmith]", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Un Forgeron [A Blacksmith]", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Eugène Delacroix", "Sort_Artist" : "Delacroix, Eugène", "Disp_Dimen" : "52.5 cm x 37.1 cm (20 11/16 in. x 14 5/8 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "52.5 cm", "Disp_Width" : "37.1 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Aquatint", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Aquatint", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Delacroix and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres were rivals representing different sides of the debate over the form that art should take, and the Academy accepted both of them into its ranks. Unlike Ingres’s linear style, Delacroix’s art relies more on color (or in the case of prints, tone), rather than line and contour, and on an expressive application of the medium to convey its message. An unconventional and anti-classical subject, Delacroix’s blacksmith, fashioned in the aftermath of the July Revolution (1830), offers a new and threatening image of the working class. Powerful and determined, standing in his shadowy and sinister workshop, the image of a blacksmith provoked strong emotions – confidence, pride and hope among the under class; fear and contempt among those who held political power. A London print publisher and dealer suggested that Toulouse-Lautrec produce a series of drawings and lithographs of the singer to sell during her visit to London in 1898. Guilbert’s appearance was canceled, but the dealer published Lautrec’s eight lithographs and frontispiece later that year. These is plate number four (Yvette Guilbert in the Aristide Bruant Song: à Menilmontant) of the series. Breaking with tradition, Toulouse-Lautrec did not present Guilbert as an idealized beauty. Rather, he exaggerated her unique features: a distinct thin silhouette (not the preferred standard at the time), pale skin, flaming red hair, and signature long black gloves. Guilbert not only looked unusual but also had a unique performance style, standing still and moving only her arms while she sang outrageously bawdy songs.
