To produce an etching, a metal plate is first covered with an acid-resistant ground, through which the artist draws with a sharp, fine point. The plate is then bathed in acid, which bites the exposed drawing to form the grooves that receive the printing ink. Whereas the engraver’s burin demands great discipline and labor, the etching needle allows a spontaneity and freedom comparable to that of a pen and ink sketch.
