The fourteen plates present sweeping views within vast interiors of massive masonry construction. Certain architectural motifs, various accoutrements of prisons and torture, and above all the suggestion of overpowering weight signal the theme. The Carceri conflate the visionary reconstruction of ancient Roman architecture in one earlier series, the Prima Parte, and the fanciful variations upon archaeological remains in another, the Grotteschi. Meanwhile their superimposition of rigorous perspective over frequently illogical structure recalls Piranesi’s training in scenographic decoration. As they were fully articulated in later states with extensive re-biting and burin work, the Carceri are dark, menacing prefigurations of the awesome beauty of Edmund Burke’s “sublime.” But each plate began with a preparation in practically pure etching, which was issued in a small edition for connoisseurs. On the one hand, their fluent gesture and animated surface hark back to the earliest Italian etching. On the other, their ambiguous subject and summary rendering prefigure the preoccupation with surface and the self-referential technique of modernism. pigment. He began by lightly sketching the scene with black chalk, over which he applied heavy red chalk. Contours appear darker and more defined, a result of Ricchi outlining figures with a brush dipped in water. He finalized the drawing with white opaque paint, possibly containing lead carbonate, which in some areas has grayed due to oxidation with sulfur in the air. The scene is from the book of Esther. At a banquet hosted by Esther and her husband, King Ahasuerus, Haman gestures his arms in mock innocence. Earlier in the story Haman had proposed hanging Esther’s cousin, Mordecai, and the entire Jewish nation for their disrespect and pride. Here Esther reveals her own Jewish identity, sparing their lives. With Haman’s nervous smile and upraised hands, Ricchi conveys the emotional complexity of a man who senses his own doom. Trained in the Bolognese academy, he reacted against its increasingly stale and unfelt formulae by attempting to return to its first principles, or at least early manifestation, in the art of Guido Reni. The result of this deliberate archaism is an extreme refinement of form and color, a complete suppression of affect, and an unearthly beauty. In character and appearance, Creti’s works recall Mannerism created in the region of Emilia and equally anticipate the true Neoclassicism of several generations later. Cleopatra is a perfect demonstration of this ideal style. The attitude could scarcely be more contrived, the drawing more elegant, the palette more artificial, and the psychology more remote. Intellectual appeal overwhelms plausibility and empathy. Light, space, and sentiment—reasoned and shaped but still accessible in the period’s conventional classicism—here become near abstractions. Creti would often create replicas of individual motifs from larger compositions. This figure corresponds to one that appears in the painting Achilles Dipped in the Styx (Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna). Here, however, the motif is more logical and better resolved, suggesting that it preceded the larger composition. Patrons, it seems, requested not just replication but incorporation of favorite motifs, which Creti’s conceptual and systematic style could readily accommodate.
