Steeped in the study of antique statuary and the classical tradition in painting, from Raphael through Reni, Batoni developed an especially ordered, polished, rhetorically precise version of academic late Baroque draftsmanship. Study of models from life became standard artistic practice and took its conventional forms in the 18th century. Batoni’s are exceptionally sound in structure but sensitive to surface properties. Even more than for most artists, they represent the foundation of his style. Countless, his paintings carry on Tintoretto’s difficult synthesis of painterly values and complex design with an automatic ease, reemergent naturalism, and self-conscious reference to earlier 16th-century examples, Titian in particular. Ceaseless as both pre-paratory activity and exercise, his draftsmanship is similarly predicated upon lin-ear procedure and rhythmic organization, but ultimately unconcerned with structure and instead dedicated to momentary optical properties. Inspired by a lost scene in Tintoretto’s celebrated History of Adam and Eve for the Scuola della Trinità, rendered in Palma’s most frequent technique, and especially vibrant despite a conspicuous loss, this is an excellent example.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning Collection, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "drawing", "Creation_Place2" : "Italian", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.1273.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.1273.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.1273.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.1273.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "5705", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 16021, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/16021", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.1089", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "0", "_Disp_End_Date" : "0", "Disp_Title" : "A Male Nude Pounding", "Alt_Title" : "A Male Nude with Arm Upraised", "Obj_Title" : "A Male Nude Pounding", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Stefano Della Bella", "Sort_Artist" : "Della Bella, Stefano", "Disp_Dimen" : "21.6 cm x 19.7 cm (8 1/2 in. x 7 3/4 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "21.6 cm", "Disp_Width" : "19.7 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Red chalk with faint squaring in black chalk on ivory antique laid paper mounted on paper", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Red chalk with faint squaring in black chalk on ivory antique laid paper mounted on paper", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Very few red chalk drawings by Stefano Della Bella survive. A collector of Rembrandt’s prints and influenced by Jacques Callot, he preferred layering washes of gray or golden inks with black chalk to red chalk. Working rapidly, he would often flip the sheet and rework the drawing on the other side from the ghost image coming through the paper. At the edges of this drawing, stains confirm that the paper is glued down, preventing us from comfirming that it is a two-sided drawing. Della Bella’s delicate lines contrast with the intensity of the moment. Barely visible in the man’s raised hand is an object with three knobs. Supporting himself with the other arm, his whole body braces before the strike. His hair flows back, his mouth rages, and muscles strain. These are attributes normally associated with Samson who “with the jaw of an ass” killed “a thousand men” (Judges 15:16), but the drawing could also be a study of a man hammering, casting back to ten-year-old Della Bella’s apprenticeship in the shop of a metalsmith. His biographer, De Domenici, mentions that in Rome around 1656, Giordano was struck by some drawings by Cambiaso and took to copying them. While clearly inspired by Cambiaso, the hand responsible for this drawing is broader in rhythm and more generalized in effect. It is consistent with other drawings that have been attributed to Giordano around this time. Apollo and Marsyas was also a favorite subject in seventeenth-century Naples.
