Piper & Co. in Munich. The portfolio was commissioned by Reinhard Piper and Julius Meier-Graefe, the founder of the Marées Gesellschaft. The program of this society included the publication of bibliophile books and portfolios with original prints, which included Gesichter of 1919 by Beckmann, and Antike Legenden by Lovis Corinth of the same year. The ten drypoints contained in Jahrmarkt were all executed in 1921 and rank amongst the most important graphic works by Max Beckmann. The great manual dexterity and tight control demanded from the drypoint provided the artist with a most effective means to communicate his conception of art vis-à-vis its relationship to the world. Many of the works in the portfolio were executed in Vienna, and are based on his visits to the Prater, the large amusement park. To Beckmann, the annual fair represented a microcosm of contemporary society. The subject matter comprises close-up views of characters of the fair as well as panoramic vistas of the fairground. By linking everyday life with the artificiality of the theatrical world, the artist tried to express life''s ephemeral existence and illusions. Customarily, these scenes provided the opportunity to describe peasant outfits, manners and facial caricatures. While Dürer’s peasants adhere to this tradition, they have been rendered as physically monumental and maintain a degree of dignity in their mores. Like Dürer’s other engravings from this period, the figures have been modeled with fine parallel strokes that tend toward a single tone. His portrait of the great humanist Desiderius Erasmus is his largest and most complex. Dürer had drawn the sitter on a visit to the Netherlands in 1520. By 1525 Erasmus lamented that he had still not seen the promised print. Returning to the project, Dürer borrowed the composition from a painting of Erasmus by Quentin Massys (Louvre, Paris) and inserted his earlier bust-length study. Seeing the engraving, Erasmus noted that the likeness was “not altogether striking.” Later observers have often criticized the composition as awkward. Dürer’s technique, however, rises to a level of differentiation unusual in the late engravings. In their focus and conspicuous detail, numerous passages approach still-life. The light has a pervasiveness and a mystery that suggest both the scholar’s theological concerns and the artist’s own late spirituality. Then there is the conceit of the frame in the background, rhyming with the print’s shape, shedding light like a window but instead bearing inscriptions. The first, in Latin, identifies the artist and the sitter. The second, in Greek, notes, “His writings offer a better likeness.” These inscriptions may refer to the circumstances of the engraving’s creation. In any case, the portrait becomes an extraordinarily modern meditation upon the nature and limits of visual representation.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Physical examination rarely occurred except uroscopy, the examination of urine, a method based on the humors. Uroscopy was a common method for diagnosing illness. The color of the urine, as well as the cloudiness, precipitates, and particles in the urine, was believed to indicate the cause of the disorder. It is one of the oldest forms of diagnostic testing, extending back to the days of Hippocrates. It was a necessary procedure because direct examination of a patient, or at least disrobing the patient, was socially unacceptable. Perhaps it is for this reason that while apothecaries still carried an aura of trade, the profession was nonetheless considered a genteel business and was quite popular. Michel Schuppach, a famed uroscopist, is celebrated in this print. He is portrayed at work in his pharmacy, examining a vial of the young lady’s urine, while others wait their turn. The well-mannered clientele in their fine costume offer visual testimony to the widespread reputation of the distinguished uroscopist. In the image, his dancing slippers appear from beneath Death’s monk’s robe as he dances to the fiddle music that he plays. In his wake lie the bodies of the costumed revelers, who were met unprepared for death. with whom she came into contact, first through literary sources and then directly through her husband’s medical practice. She explained in an interview that these subjects interested her more for aesthetic than social reasons, but she is remembered as a socially engaged artist who protested vehemently against World War I. Here again she felt some ambivalence, as she supported her son’s decision to volunteer to join the German army against her husband’s wishes. His death in Flanders shortly after enlisting became the fulcrum upon which her later art balanced. This powerful woodcut comes from her most famous series. About it she wrote in her diary, “Yet again I am not finished with the War series. Done the sheet ‘Parents’ over again. Suddenly it looks entirely bad to me. Far too bright and hard and distinct. Pain is totally dark.” Although she was dissatisfied with the outcome, the woodcut medium, its heavy black planes slashed here with stark white highlights, aptly conveys the sense of nearly uncontrollable parental grief at the loss of a child. This is a preparatory study for an illusionistic fresco of the founders of the Premonstratensian Monastery at Zabrdovice (Czech Republic). His only signed and dated drawing, it reveals Winterhalter’s debt to Maulbertsch in the broad description, mobile light and iridescent color. His style depends upon the Venetians of the early eighteenth century, particularly Sebastiano Ricci and Gaspare Diziani. In 1773 he was commissioned an altarpiece of The Baptism of Christ for the popular pilgrimage church at Sonntagberg. One of the most capable and prolific etchers in Central Europe, he created an etching of the composition before the altarpiece was even completed. This print may have been part of an effort to raise funds for the project. It was with this extraordinarily fresh, double-sided sheet that Kremser-Schmidt prepared the etching. He began by copying his painting on the recto (reproduced, left), then traced this drawing on the verso, and finally transferred this second, reversed version to the copper plate. This process facilitated any correction of the work on the plate and restored the eventual print to the proper orientation of the painting. Most striking, despite its technical role and necessarily restrained handling, the drawing possesses wonderfully varied color, sparkling light, and sheer vibrancy. According to legend, Saint Luke painted a portrait of the Virgin; thus, he became the patron saint of artists. This intimate picture shows Saint Luke at his easel accompanied by his attribute, the bull, labeling him as one of the four evangelists. The viewer of this scene is meant to meditate on the symbolic significance of the act of painting. The canvas acts a metaphor for the soul. The seventeen prints in Dürer’s Life of the Virgin brought the perspective construction, refined forms, and complex expression of Renaissance painting to woodcut, a technique previously associated with simple, generally popular imagery. Disseminated across Europe, this series’ compositions and figural motifs were probably the most frequently quoted images of the sixteenth century.
