The result of this idiosyncratic conservatism, seen to advantage in the Collection’s Lady with a String of Pearls, is an extreme refinement of form and color, a suppression of affect, and a precarious beauty. The same ideality and relationship to Bolognese tradition are evident in Creti’s drawings. Mostly in pen-and-ink, they are admirable in structure and fluency, but unnatural, rather abstract, in their regularity and ellipses. Leonardo da Vinci’s famous grotesque heads are the most conspicuous early examples. For Parmigianino such studies were a pretext for exploring stylized appearance and sheer graphic beauty. They also established a distinct tradition in Emilian drawing. The reaction against Mannerism in the late sixteenth century brought a new concern with natural appearance and psychological states. The artistic reform of the Carracci featured their systematic pursuit and conventional expression through life study. By the later seventeenth century, this had become a staple of academic training. The rendering of physiognomic expression was now an explicit artistic research, while imaginary studies were generally relegated to the new realm of caricature. Bolognese artists, however, upheld their early tradition. The school’s principal academic painter of the late eighteenth century, Gaetano Gandolfi, and his son Mauro made a specialty of the genre, transforming it into virtuoso performance for collectors. Gaetano’s studies of the kind are more dense in pattern, coherent in emotion, and regular in articulation. Mauro’s are distinguished by a greater detachment of one motif from another, flourishes about the perimeter, and prominent stipple in the modeling. This is a very fine example, inscribed in French as a gift and thus underscoring its intended function.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, The Suida-Manning With the color of paper as a backdrop, drawings in this manner exhibit the light, volume, and texture of paintings. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s sinuous and rhythmic lines of red and white cause The Head of a Warrior to emerge slowly. His very first public commission in Rome (1714) was an altarpiece of the Madonna of the Rosary for San Clemente. Its overwhelming success led to an immediate request for a pendant painting. This unpublished drawing is a compositional study for that second altarpiece. The elaboration of the study is so pictorial (and now properly legible following treatment to reverse the oxidation of its heightening) and the discrepancies between it and the painting are so minor -- not to mention the squaring of the design for transfer -- that is must have served as the model. He was first trained in Milan with the idiosyncratic Paolo Pagani, but his style depends more on the sensuous and decorative aspects of Sebastiano Ricci. Pellegrini’s drawing is broad and soft, his palette warm and pastel, and his paint handling dense and fluid. Defying gravity, bordering on the caricatural, this painterly virtuosity was a tremendous success across Europe, with the artist called to execute significant fresco cycles and numerous canvases in England, France, and Germany. During a year-long sojourn in Antwerp, Pellegrini carried out three major decorative projects. This painting is an unpublished oil sketch for one of these, a much-admired canvas for the ceiling of the Salle du Petit Collège in the city’s town hall. Appropriate to that setting, it represents the figures of Justice and Prudence crushing two male figures identifiable as Avarice and Deceit. Phosphorescent in color, practically sculpted in paint, this sketch dramatizes the material properties for which Pellegrini was so highly regarded. These properties are conspicuous in the wake of a recent cleaning and relining of the canvas. The Suida-Manning Collection includes two other paintings by Pellegrini: a comparably rich, half-length figure of Bellona from around 1713–1714, and a more summary Venus and Cupid, which may have come from a decorative ensemble. and inaugurating its second great age. Schooled in Bologna, Piazzetta learned a naturalism based upon systematic drawing, featuring intense chiaroscuro, and dedicated to dramatic expression. Reconciling this conception with the flickering light and personalized brushwork of his native tradition, while rejecting its bright palette and decorativeness, Piazzetta brought new life to the school’s tired formulae. Unlike many compatriots, he would rarely pursue monumental decoration and never work outside Venice. He did, however, bring to religious and genre subjects a force of visual sensation and human characterization equal to that of the early Baroque. This is a preparatory study for a painting of Saint John the Baptist at Rovigo. Drawn from a model, it demonstrates Piazzetta’s foundation in academic practice but inclination toward more selective description, varied touch, and sincere feeling. Indeed, this figure is especially present and powerful even for Piazzetta. It reveals at how early a stage the artist determined the eventual pose, chiaroscuro, and expression of the painting. Not least, this drawing predicts Piazzetta’s life-size chalk “heads of characters,” which would become the most celebrated and reproduced drawings in eighteenth-century Venice. The museum possesses two other drawings and two fine paintings by Piazzetta as well as numerous prints by his best interpreters. Repenting, he returned to his father, who welcomed him back, telling the older brother, “to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found." Combining a critique of attachment to material well-being, with an affirmation of forgiveness and an allusion to eternal life, the culminating scene was a frequent subject of Baroque painting. This interpretation is a splendid example of Ricci’s mature style. The returning son kneels upon the threshold while the father extends open arms. While its small scale and rich touch might suggest a preparatory study, its compositional equilibration and regular finish indicate a completed work. Newly evident and impressive following conservation in 2001 are the clear tonality revived from Veronese, the pronounced chiaroscuro inspired by contemporary Bolognese painters, and the dramatic sweep despite its size. His first training was with Sebastiano Ricci, but completely determining of his style was his long collaboration with the elder Tiepolo. Although his juvenile works have often been confused with the master’s, Zugno’s mature style is readily distinguished by its more delicate description, soft contour, and sweet color. Not just due to temper, this gentle and elegant manner probably reflects some knowledge of the school of Watteau. This lovely picture renders a young couple playing cards under the supervision of an older couple – her guardians? – and with the service of two pages. In such a context, the game serves as a metaphor for courtship. Formally, the picture depends upon Tiepolo’s style of the late 1740s and 1750s. In composition it may be compared with Tiepolo’s Banquet of Cleopatra in Moscow (1747), while in figural rhythm and lightening palette it recalls his frescoes of Henry III in Paris (1750) and canvases of Rinaldo and Armida in Chicago (1755). At just this time, 1754, Zugno was executing a History of Cleopatra in fresco for the Villa Soderini at Nervesa (practically destroyed in the Second World War), and would have been consulting the master’s recent history paintings closely.
