One year after arriving in New York, he produced his first ever lithograph: Vaudeville in Harlem. Of the Blanton Museum’s six New York lithographs by Orozco, this one is unique in its representation of a local urban scene. The Harlem theater would have attracted Orozco, whose work often focused on popular culture, and it is possible that he saw a link between the Harlem Renaissance and the emphasis that the Mexican Revolution placed on Mexico’s indigenous population and culture. Vaudeville in Harlem uses the full tonal range of lithography, from the dark shadows of the audience to the spotlit stage, and the composition suggests that he was more interested in the social space of the theater than in the vaudeville spectacle itself. Despite the quality and sophistication of his New York prints, Orozco soon found himself under pressure to produce more typically Mexican scenes. Most of his subsequent work in the United States depicts scenes from the Mexican Revolution in the style for which he was already famous.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Archer M. Chávez Morado reflects his pessimistic view of the growing metropolis in a series of unsettling vignettes set in dark streets. Outside a theatre, musicians perform by the light of the passing cars. Police are about to storm a peaceful meeting. A seductive woman waits by the door of a one-star hotel. A man leaves the scene of a hideous crime. Under the cover of night, we discover the dark side of modernity. Signs of modern life are everywhere, yet the harsh contrast of black and white and the seedy subjects recall the gritty aesthetic of film noir rather than the utopian optimism of much of the works created in Mexico in the previous decade.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, University purchase, 1966; Transfer from the Harry Ransom Center, 1982", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "print", "Creation_Place2" : "Mexican", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1982.869.2-4.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1982.869.2-4.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1982.869.2-4.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1982.869.2-4.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "6873", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 5662, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/5662", "Disp_Access_No" : "1986.191", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1945", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1945", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1945", "Disp_Title" : "Theatre", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Theatre", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Francisco Mora", "Sort_Artist" : "Mora, Francisco", "Disp_Dimen" : "29.7 cm x 44.2 cm (11 11/16 in. x 17 3/8 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "29.7 cm", "Disp_Width" : "44.2 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Lithograph", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Lithograph", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of the IBM Corporation, 1986", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "print", "Creation_Place2" : "Mexican", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1986.191.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1986.191.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1986.191.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1986.191.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "6857", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 8939, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/8939", "Disp_Access_No" : "1982.589", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "n.d.", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "0", "_Disp_End_Date" : "0", "Disp_Title" : "The Devil Butts with His Head from 'El testerazo del diablo: Juguete pastoril en un acto [The Giant Head of the Devil: Pastoral Playlet in One Act]', Play cover", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "The Devil Butts with His Head from 'El testerazo del diablo: Juguete pastoril en un acto [The Giant Head of the Devil: Pastoral Playlet in One Act]', Play cover", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "José Guadalupe Posada", "Sort_Artist" : "Posada, José Guadalupe", "Disp_Dimen" : "20.35 cm x 12.9 cm (8 in. x 5 1/16 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "20.35 cm", "Disp_Width" : "12.9 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Relief etching on type metal and metalcut", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Relief etching on type metal and metalcut", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Alvin and Ethel Romansky, 1970", "Copyright_Type" : "public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "print", "Creation_Place2" : "Mexican", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1982.589.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1982.589.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1982.589.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1982.589.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "1243", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] }, ] }
