When Fernández returned home to Mexico City in the early 1920s, the emergence of Mexican muralism greatly influenced his work. In this work, part of a series of expressive woodcuts printed on paper in different colors, Fernández shows how on all sides of the revolution, whole families became involved in the conflict. Here again she felt some ambivalence, as she supported her son’s decision to volunteer to join the German army against her husband’s wishes. His death in Flanders shortly after enlisting became the fulcrum upon which her later art balanced. This powerful woodcut comes from her most famous series. About it she wrote in her diary, “Yet again I am not finished with the War series. Done the sheet ‘Parents’ over again. Suddenly it looks entirely bad to me. Far too bright and hard and distinct. Pain is totally dark.” Although she was dissatisfied with the outcome, the woodcut medium, its heavy black planes slashed here with stark white highlights, aptly conveys the sense of nearly uncontrollable parental grief at the loss of a child. status and authority among neighbors. Married men were assigned better seats in church than bachelors, and men with children were addressed as "yeoman." In order to maintain that status, however, husbands had to keep strict order in their households, and wife beating was common. Men who were "henpecked" as in The Irate Wife, lost esteem in the eyes of their colleagues. By referring in the inscription to the man in this scene as "a husband in name only," the artist leaves open the question of the validity of marriages arranged solely for the social benefits they provided. Living and working in a region that once was part of Mexico, the artist has written about creating art as a “Chicana in occupied America” and wanting to articulate “the experience of a minority woman.”", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Gilberto Cárdenas, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.487-Sheet.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.487-Sheet.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.487-Sheet.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.487-Sheet.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "19173", "Image_Type" : "Digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 23433, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/23433", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.513", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1991", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1991", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1991", "Disp_Title" : "Frida y Diego Nos Muestra México", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Frida y Diego Nos Muestra México", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Tony Ortega", "Sort_Artist" : "Ortega, Tony", "Disp_Dimen" : "94.9 x 71.4 cm (37 3/8 x 28 1/8 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "94.9 cm", "Disp_Width" : "71.4 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "sheet", "Medium" : "Screenprint", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Screenprint", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Gilberto Cárdenas, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.513.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.513.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.513.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.513.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "20595", "Image_Type" : "Digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 23458, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/23458", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.538", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1995", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1995", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1995", "Disp_Title" : "La Tarde", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "La Tarde", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Artemio Rodríguez", "Sort_Artist" : "Rodríguez, Artemio", "Disp_Dimen" : "56 x 33.2 cm (22 1/16 x 13 1/16 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "56 cm", "Disp_Width" : "33.2 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "sheet", "Medium" : "Screenprint", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Screenprint", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Gilberto Cárdenas, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ ] },{ "embark_ID" : 23475, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/23475", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.546", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1993", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1993", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1993", "Disp_Title" : "The Virgin of the Lake", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "The Virgin of the Lake", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Alejandro Romero", "Sort_Artist" : "Romero, Alejandro", "Disp_Dimen" : "103.8 x 73.7 cm (40 7/8 x 29 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "103.8 cm", "Disp_Width" : "73.7 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "sheet", "Medium" : "Screenprint", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Screenprint", "Info_Page_Comm" : "A complex religious figure, "la Virgen" is a traditional female role model that embodies both purity and motherhood. She is simultaneously revered and reimagined by artists to fit contemporary notions of gender. In Alejandro Romero’s "Virgin of the Lake", the crowned Virgin stands under a four-post canopied altar used in religious processions. She is surrounded by the Chicago landscape, and a river and freeway intersect at her center. Mesoamerican iconography and Catholic religious figures are visible across her skirt. Romero takes a distinctive approach to the subject, incorporating elements of his hometown, such as the Langham building to the Virgin’s right and the monumental Pablo Picasso sculpture, Chicago, that she holds in her right hand.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Gilberto Cárdenas, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2017.546-Sheet.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2017.546-Sheet.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2017.546-Sheet.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2017.546-Sheet.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "19171", "Image_Type" : "Digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 23483, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/23483", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.560", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1987", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1987", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1987", "Disp_Title" : "Like Father Like Son", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Like Father Like Son", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Dan Segura", "Sort_Artist" : "Segura, Dan", "Disp_Dimen" : "89 x 58.6 cm (35 1/16 x 23 1/16 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "89 cm", "Disp_Width" : "58.6 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "sheet", "Medium" : "Screenprint", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Screenprint", "Info_Page_Comm" : "", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Gilberto Cárdenas, 2017", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings; Latin American Art", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ ] }, ] }
