Breaking with tradition, Toulouse-Lautrec did not present Guilbert as an idealized beauty. Rather, he exaggerated her unique features: a distinct thin silhouette (not the preferred standard at the time), pale skin, flaming red hair, and signature long black gloves. Guilbert not only looked unusual but also had a unique performance style, standing still and moving only her arms while she sang outrageously bawdy songs.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Transfer from the General Libraries, The University of Texas at Austin, 1979", "Copyright_Type" : "Public domain", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "print", "Creation_Place2" : "French", "Department" : "Prints and Drawings", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1979.45.8-9.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1979.45.8-9.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1979.45.8-9.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1979.45.8-9.tif", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "4245", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 1130, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/1130", "Disp_Access_No" : "1995.34", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1828", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1828", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1828", "Disp_Title" : "Jane Shore", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "Jane Shore", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Eugène Delacroix", "Sort_Artist" : "Delacroix, Eugène", "Disp_Dimen" : "43.3 cm x 54.6 cm (17 1/16 in. x 21 1/2 in.)", "Disp_Height" : "43.3 cm", "Disp_Width" : "54.6 cm", "Dimen_Extent" : "Sheet", "Medium" : "Lithograph on chine collé", "Support" : "", "Disp_Medium" : "Lithograph on chine collé", "Info_Page_Comm" : "Jane Shore (circa 1445-1527) was the mistress of King Edward IV of England. After the king’s death, his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, accused her of conspiracy for her role in the crisis of succession and the civil war that followed. The story was resurrected (and liberally and dramatically changed) by Nicholas Rowe in his play The Tragedy of Jane Shore, written in 1714 during a similar period of political unrest in England over the rightful heir to the throne. In Rowe’s play, King Richard III deprives Jane Shore of her property, forcing her into poverty, homelessness, and, finally, a tragic death on the streets. Fundamentally, the play was about the rules of succession and the property rights of private citizens. The subject may have been of special interest to Delacroix considering that France had just undergone its own monarchical succession when Charles X ascended to the throne after Louis XVIII’s death in 1824. The new ministers Charles X appointed initiated policies that similarly threatened the property rights of French citizens. Matters grew worse, and in 1830 another revolution erupted.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Purchase through the generosity of M.K. One year after arriving in New York, he produced his first ever lithograph: Vaudeville in Harlem. Of the Blanton Museum’s six New York lithographs by Orozco, this one is unique in its representation of a local urban scene. The Harlem theater would have attracted Orozco, whose work often focused on popular culture, and it is possible that he saw a link between the Harlem Renaissance and the emphasis that the Mexican Revolution placed on Mexico’s indigenous population and culture. Vaudeville in Harlem uses the full tonal range of lithography, from the dark shadows of the audience to the spotlit stage, and the composition suggests that he was more interested in the social space of the theater than in the vaudeville spectacle itself. Despite the quality and sophistication of his New York prints, Orozco soon found himself under pressure to produce more typically Mexican scenes. Most of his subsequent work in the United States depicts scenes from the Mexican Revolution in the style for which he was already famous.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Archer M. In the play, Ophelia's father manipulates her into spying on Hamlet. Once she is discovered, Hamlet feigns madness with her and treats her cruelly. Having lost Hamlet's affection and her father whom Hamlet killed, Ophelia goes mad and soon dies. It is uncertain whether her death by drowning was accidental or suicide. The scene of her madness (act IV, scene 5) is one of the best known in Western literature. Mortimer, one of the leading English artists of the eighteenth century, was known for bringing the Italian Baroque aesthetic sensibility in etching to England. He etched some of the most ambitious and dramatic plates of the period in the vigorous style of his pen drawings. The Shakespeare Characters was his best known series. Ophelia is one of eight from its first part. ", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Purchase through the generosity of M.K. Hage, Jr. and the Archer M. Chávez Morado reflects his pessimistic view of the growing metropolis in a series of unsettling vignettes set in dark streets. Outside a theatre, musicians perform by the light of the passing cars. Under the cover of night, we discover the dark side of modernity. These nocturnal scenes of two figures aiding a third, illuminated by a brightly lit doorway, were likely inspired by a painting on the same theme--then attributed to Rembrandt--on view at the Louvre Museum when Berman was living in Paris. The Bible story’s message to “love your neighbor as yourself ” apparently resonated strongly with Berman; as a Russian Jew, he was subject to the increased xenophobia and anti-Semitism that the looming economic depression brought to France. Berman immigrated to the United States in the mid-1930s and began a successful career as a theatrical set designer. The architecture in this painting anticipates Berman’s stage designs, as the layered and receding forms of the buildings highlight the dramatic action taking place in the foreground.", "Dedication" : "Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin, Gift of Mari and James A.
